Event Report RC ST GP de France

Greetings RCer's. Is there a better way to begin summer in Houston, Texas than with a RC racing event? I think not. Temp 93deg F, Humidity 58% and UV Index Very High. Tough nuts for an old man. No whine, just fact. Event duration was 1hr:30min.

RC10T3 on grid for its second and final appearance for first half of the season. Did a Final Gear Ratio (FGR) change from 4:58 to 4:83 (pinion change). By rules package that incurred a 2sec penalty added to qualifying time.

She still done good though, putting down a Q4 Qualifier and finishing P3. My first podium finish. Along the way, the '4-car' put down fast 10-lap Qualifier time and quickest 10-lap race time so far. At present, it is individual points leader at 27pts and as part of two car 'Team Condor', has the constructor lead at 37pts.

Can the RC10GTe conversion mid motor match the times of the RC10T3 rear motor? Next two races will tell the tale, as the black tub makes its debut next week.

Cheers. AC

Event Report-RC ST Austrian GP

Rain-out. Three days of rain and no drying time put paid to this event.

Que'd up and ready to roll was the RC10GTe '8-Ball' for the first of two scheduled races. Unfortunately, RD called the event and she lists as Did-Not-Start (DNS) and receives zero (0) points for the event.

All is not lost, thought. Rules package provides for double points at the next event after a rain out, the RC ST British GP in two weeks. A chance to double-down on the series leader.

Until next time. Cheers, mates. AC

Regarding the Safety Truck

Using my venerable TRX Rustler as the course Safety Truck to clear the course as safe to race prior to a Practice Session or Series Event. Built this truck as a kit back 2000-2001. Had to find a way to use it on the grass track.

Last weekends event rain out presented the opportunity for a back fit. Out came the locker diff and narrow rear swing arms from drag racing days. In went an OEM gear diff and wide trac OEM arms, along with fitting up a set of PL Hole Shot tires. Swapped out the Lunsford turnbuckles for a set of OEM fixed camber links while about it.

Safety Truck also has other duties as assigned: Clearing the track after a red flag race stoppage; validating the time difference b/w radio up timer and mechanical stop watch back-up; and serving as first drive vehicle for award of the required track competition license. Busy she is.

Cheers, and thanks again for looking in. AC

Event Report-RC ST British GP

The 8 car, RC10GT brushless conversion, took advantage of double points this event to qualify Q4 in the 10-lapper and finish P4 in the race 10-lapper.

Q4 placed her on the start/finish line with no set-back penalty. Curiously, she ran a 1:35 (1min:35sec) qualifier and a 1:35 race. Consistent for sure. Regrettably, she is out of contention for Fast Qualifier Award for first half of the season. Still, not bad for first time out.

Scoring 12x2=24pts, she is smack dab in the middle of the points race. Immediately after the event, she went into Parc Ferme (Impound) for an after race scaling to ensure she met the 60oz minimum. Good-to-go at 61oz.

The PL Hole Shots are adequate as long as the car is on track. Any off track into thicker taller grass is a no-go. Fortunately, wheel spin will usually get the truck back on track, but with substantial loss of time. Had to hold back on throttling through corners 1 and 2 to ensure she stayed on track. Thinking an upgrade to JConcepts Goosebumps rears is in her future.

Thanks for looking in and following along. Cheers and Regards. AC

Event Report RC ST GP de Germany

Perfect day. Outstanding event. 79deg F., 63% Hum., Low UV Index. Does not get any better than this in Houston summer.

Got an early start. 9:30A.M. Done by 10:55A.M. 1hr:25min event duration comes in well under the 2hr maximum. Even with adding two (2) extended 12min breaks into the race schedule.

No. 2 Truck began the day at a disadvantage under a pending 4sec penalty added to Qualifying time for two changes: one to power unit and one to gearing.

She came Q4 in the 10-lap qualifier, but dropped to Q5 after the 4sec penalty was added to her time. Dropping out of the top four meant she would start the 10-lap race with a 48" starting line set back. The Blue/Silver #2 RC10EGT rose to the occasion and ran a P4 10-lap time of 1:32. Best of the day, putting 12 points on the board. As I said at the beginning, an outstanding effort resulting in a great racing day.

Cheers and Regards. AC

Event Report Hungarian ST GP

Hey guys and gals,

Q4 and P6 today, scoring 8 points and finishing the Spring Season in a tie for third place with 20 points.

10-lap Qualifier went fair. 10-lap race less than fair. Posting a still image of coming to rest at the tree root hazard. Without reverse, and not sure of enough power to power through, elected for a self marshal. Even powering through, would have been a 4-sec penalty for displacing two (2) cones. Either way, I be the stuckee. Then to top it off, struck and displaced a hazard cone at the front straight drain spout, adding two (2) seconds to the final race time.

Am looking at adding a reversing capability to the rules package. Why not? Only one truck on the track so that would mitigate the self-marshal option.

On the good news side, this was my sixth event, qualifying me for a Level 3 (Super) competition license with endorsement.

Any way. Summer break is here now with Spring series finishing out.

Cheers. AC

Spring Awards Ceremony

Windy Acres RC Grass Track conducted its first awards ceremony of the year yesterday, acknowledging top performer of the Spring Season.

The '4-Truck', RC10T3, swept the honors with medals for Top 10-Lap Qualifier and Fast 10-Lap Race. 1min:33sec for Qual; 1min:29sec for Race. Top Qual adds one (1) season series point; Fast Race earns two (2) points. Adding those three points keeps it atop the points at 30 over 2nd place 24.

In keeping with following the full size F1 series, comes now a month break until Fall Season picks up early September. Fall promises to bring more exciting stadium truck racing action on the grass track with a slight tweaking of race format and - count 'em - two night races on the calendar.

August won't be a kick-back month, though. Planning a test practice session using a Robbie Gordon Super ST format, complete with jump. Possibly integrate three or four of those races into the series for 2020.

Thanks for looking in and taking this thread over the '1000 views' mark.
Cheers and Regards. AC

Summer Break addition

Hello fellow RCers,

Taking advantage of summer break to inset a stone start/finish line. Thinking it adds a more finished look to the track and gives definition to a start/finish.

Safety Truck re-validated the track with a 50-lap Partial Practice Session. A.O.K. The inset stones will provide an even more seamless transition once grass fills in the edges-probably by season's end.

Grass Track Events resume as F1 picks up its schedule 30Aug-1Sep with the Belgian GP. Getting the RC10T4 race ready for its intro to grass track oval.

Cheers and Regards. AC

[Note: This is a re-post moved from the RC10T3 thread. Oops. Senior moment.]

Yeah, every oval track should have a 'brickyard', like Indy.

Say? Where have you been, Bill? Been real quite around here without you.

2019 Season Wrap

Finished up the 2019 season scheduling 17 events with 3 rain outs. 14 events with wheels on the ground cutting laps. One of those 14 events was a night event.

Did a mid-season shift and began posting to another RC forum. For 2020 will migrate back here as my most favoritist RC forum ever. Posting will be to 'Local Racing Scene' sub-forum. Look for UTRL, or something to that effect, in the subject.

Hopefully David will maintain the forum in spite of minimal activity.

Cheers and Regards. 'AC'

2021 Back Yard Series

Season's over. Time to hang up the racing gloves until next fall.

Five races, one Special Test and a season ending Concours. Seven events in all over an eight month stretch.

A total of 2,017 timed and official laps raced for a distance of 365 1/10 scale miles. At an average of 8.0sec / lap that works out to 4hr:30min total run time, give or take.

Throw in the undocumented test and practice sessions, probably tack on another 1,000 laps.

Refining the rules package for 2022 to keep the racing points even closer. Anxiously awaiting Sept. 22, Fall, and racing once again. Until then, cheers mates. Keep the shiny side up...
